Alex Zelaya
Growing up amongst the hills of Northern California, Alex was influenced by the relationship between the natural and built environments at an early age. Having discovered the Pacific Northwest through studying architecture at the University of Oregon, the forests and mountains have become a new lens to further explore this connection. Alex is passionate about design that shows a natural sensitivity and connection to life. His interests led him to join Hacker in 2012, attracted specifically by the studio culture and its position as a strong design leader in the region. Outside the office, Alex enjoys backpacking, cycling, and pursuing other creative outlets, including design competitions and art courses at PNCA.

Raku Firing at the Kiln Yard

A few weeks ago, Portland Community College celebrated the opening of their new kiln yard designed by THA. The ceramics faculty, PCC staff, Pacificmark Construction, and members of the community gathered together at the newly minted arts facility.

The Kiln Yard project marks an exciting step forward for the college’s Visual Arts Program. The new structure, which is located directly adjacent to the ceramic studios, provides a covered shelter that unites the kilns and workspaces that were previously scattered amongst an open gravel yard. Students now have access to all new kilns, including a wood-fired and a soda gas kiln which will be built by students, as well as a Bailey downdraft kiln and an Olympic Raku kiln.
